Kokorozashi

Kokorozashi – The Moral Foundation of Junomichi

At the heart of Junomichi lies the moral principle of Kokorozashi, a concept that can be understood as “intention” or “aspiration.”

In Junomichi, Kokorozashi can be understood as working with the intelligence of the heart, guiding practitioners to act not only with their minds but also with emotional wisdom and moral integrity.

The intelligence of the heart is the ability to act with sincerity, and a deep awareness of one’s own moral responsibilities. Kokorozashi teaches practitioners to align their intentions with compassion and respect, ensuring that their actions benefit for themselves and their partner. It asks that each movement, each decision, be made with thoughtfulness and care, taking into account the well-being of both Uke and Tori.

This emotional intelligence is crucial in cultivating harmony between partners. Practising with Kokorozashi means approaching each moment with a sense of mutual respect and shared growth. It is the moral compass that ensures practitioners engage with each other sincerely, without ego, aggression, or a desire for dominance.

The principle of Decision plays an essential role in realising Kokorozashi. Decision requires that every action be carried out with clear intention and firm commitment, free from doubt or hesitation. When Tori initiates a movement, it must come from a place of clarity, guided by the intelligence of the heart, and Uke’s response must be equally purposeful and respectful. This decisiveness ensures that each action is aligned with the moral foundation of Junomichi, creating a space for cooperation and growth rather than conflict.

Self-Control also plays a key role in Kokorozashi. In Junomichi, self-control involves regulating physical actions, emotional and mental responses. Practitioners must research the ways to carry out actions, guided by their heart rather than impulsive reactions. This level of control ensures that the interaction between Uke and Tori remains balanced and respectful, allowing both to work together without aggression or force.

Finally, Kokorozashi ties into the principle of Encompassing, which refers to the ability to integrate all elements; mind, body, and heart into a unified whole. When practitioners manifest Kokorozashi, they approach Junomichi holistically, recognising that the practice is not merely about physical technique but also about cultivating moral integrity and emotional intelligence. Through this integration, they can act with the full force of their heart’s wisdom, creating harmony and understanding in their practice.
