Requirements to create an Ippon

Requirements to create an Ippon

At the heart of Junomichi is the creation of an Ippon.

The meaning of Ippon symbolises a moment of perfect harmony, where the interaction between two practitioners is completely balanced and their movements are unified.

Creating an Ippon is the result of a deep, mutual understanding between partners.

It requires Tori (the giver) and Uke (the receiver) to be in complete harmony with one another, constantly aware of each other’s energy, movements, and intentions. There is no opposition, no forceful attempt to overpower or dominate. Instead, the creation of an Ippon comes from a place of balance, where both individuals work together, flowing naturally between movements.

To create an Ippon in Junomichi, practitioners must fully engage with the five core principles. These principles guide not only the physical movements but also the mindset required to approach the practice. Ippon represents the culmination of these principles, where movement, intention, and moral alignment converge into a single, harmonious moment.

The creation of an Ippon reflects Dr. Kano’s vision that Judo (and Junomichi as an extension of this) is about mutual improvement. Both Uke and Tori contribute equally to the creation of this moment, allowing for growth in a cooperative, rather than competitive, environment.
